The BIOCHAINS Atlantic project, which focuses on the development and structuring of algal biomass value chains in the Atlantic regions, held its second partners’ meeting last July in Porto (Portugal). As a partner in the European consortium, Biotech Santé Bretagne took part in this meeting organised by WEDOTECH. It provided an opportunity to review the progress made within the consortium, coordinate the next stages of the project and strengthen our collaboration with the various European partners.
An analysis of the macroalgae and microalgae biomass ecosystem across the entire Atlantic region
One of the main areas of focus was the presentation of the initial results from Work Package 1, which centred on analysing the macroalgae and microalgae biomass ecosystem across the entire Atlantic region. This work aims to identify the key stakeholders, existing resources and capacities, as well as to identify opportunities to strengthen algal biomass value chains and support their sustainable development.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the next steps and to make progress on defining actions to improve links between the various stakeholders involved.
BlueBio Alliance, a collaborative partner in the project, took part in the meeting to contribute its expertise and connections within the Portuguese blue biotechnology ecosystem. This international representation provided an opportunity to share different perspectives on the development of algal biomass value chains and to jointly take forward the project’s next activities.
A visit to CIIMAR, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research in Porto
The meeting also included a tour of the premises of CIIMAR (Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental) in Porto. During this tour, participants were able to learn about the organisation’s scientific and technological capabilities and explore opportunities for collaboration and synergies in the fields of biotechnology and marine resources.
This second meeting marks a new stage in the development of BIOCHAINS Atlantic, which will continue to work towards identifying and harnessing the potential of algal biomass, optimising its value chains and contributing to more sustainable economic growth across the Atlantic region.
