CASCALG Project – Cascading biorefinery of two macroalgae: evaluation of biostimulation and elicitation properties in plants

Description

This project is the result of a collaboration between the Marine Biotechnology and Chemistry Laboratory (LBCM), which specializes in the preparation and characterization of seaweed extracts, and a company specializing in the development of solutions for plant and animal health. This project is part of a comprehensive approach to macroalgae valorization based on the concept of cascade biorefining. The main objective is to develop eco-friendly and innovative processes enabling the selective and sequential extraction of fractions enriched in macromolecules and metabolites of interest, while preserving their biological properties.

Objectives

The person recruited will be required to:

• Identify – drawing on the bibliography and the expertise of project partners the most relevant extraction and fractionation processes for the cascading biorefinery of raw materials. Extract different molecular families and enrich the resulting fractions through purification or further separation.
• Characterize the biochemical and chemical composition (metabolomics) as well as the properties of the obtained fractions (e.g. molecular weight, purity), using established or newly developed analytical strategies and methods.
• Assess the biological activities of the generated extracts and fractions through bioassays.
• Organize, implement, and oversee project components requiring external services.
• Coordinate and plan studies in collaboration with project partners.
• Prepare scientific reports and present results to steering committees and during regular progress meetings.
• Contribute to the dissemination of findings through scientific communications.

Requirements

• PhD in biotechnology, preferably with expertise in natural products chemistry and bioprocesses.
• Proven backgrounds in seaweed processing, eco-extraction and fractionation methods, and molecular characterization (chromatography, metabolomics) are requested.
• Experience in biorefinery approaches would be a strong advantage.
• Advanced knowledge of analytical instruments is highly valued (e.g. LC-MS, GC, HPAEC, HPSEC).
• Strong motivation and at least two years of postdoctoral experience, combined with problem-solving ability, communication skills, project management, and leadership qualities.
